and when you’re tired

you stretch, yawn,

snuggle a little closer,

looking at me with eyes

that flicker

of distant places

I tell you to sleep, my precious,

curl darkness about you

as a blanket,

sigh wistfully of pleasures and promise

deferred,

dream of better tomorrows,

of joys springing from the ground

like flowers,

of moments strung along in pearl-like splendour,

of quiet bliss,

facing the grind

of time together,

knowing that one thing

only lasts and the revolutions of the spheres

are of no consequence

our fingers interweave

in harmony

you smile and

drift peacefully

to other worlds,

safe in the knowledge

the arm about you

would never move

to betray you

and our breaths

softly heave

in unison….
